1960's, 70's and 80's
After the warnings in the 1950s and 1960s, the industry continued to spew out toxic gases during the 1970s. They were really going at it this period. During this time, a material called asbestos was used in the production of something called asbestos cement sheets, which were used as building cladding. Asbestos is an extremely dangerous and toxic material. Asbestos cement was also produced extensively here in Norway. In Slemmestad in Asker, there was a dedicated asbestos cement factory. It was shut down in 1978 because they discovered serious illnesses among the workers due to the asbestos in the cement sheets. During this time and since the early 1900s, amalgam was also used in dental fillings, which has been a topic of debate in the media for the past 20 years.
